In the first chapter of Boyd’s book, she discusses the effect that the internet has on our lives, and how it impacts teens. Teens need to be more self-aware about how and what they are doing when they are online, because the internet is a dangerous and tricky place for teens to be navigating. Some teens do not realize the negative impact that improper actions on social media can affect them in the physical world. Boyd addresses this over a variety of different topics, but she sums it up best by saying, “The internet has not evolved into an idyllic zone in which people are free from the limitations of the embodied world.” (53) While people are correct that they can be anyone they want in the online world, they also have to be cautious of what they are doing. When posting on social media. you need to be aware that more than just the intended audience will have access to the content, and those people may take it out of context. Improper use of social media, can cost people jobs opportunities, college acceptances, and other important life events. It is important that you think twice before posting anything online, as it will always be out there.
